Black Star Riders / GUN / The Amorettes gig review, Inverness 7/3/17

The Highlands of Scotland shook, as three great bands rocked The Ironworks on Tuesday night. Black Star Riders arrived in Inverness supported by the mighty GUN and hard rockers The Amorettes. My first time seeing Black Star Riders, and they packed out the entire venue. An unlikely sight was American comedian and host of 'That Metal Show', Don Jamieson who introduced the band. Don did a great job of hyping up the crowd before the guys went on, even if he didn't know what day of the week it was (we'll blame it on the jetlag!).

Promoting their latest, and highly successful album, 'Heavy Fire', Ricky Warwick, Scott Gorham, Damon Johnson and friends raced through their back catalogue of melodic twin guitar tunes with an obvious Thin Lizzy influence. Opening the set with the title track from the new album, and playing old favourites such as 'Bound For Glory' and 'Finest Hour' the crowd were going crazy for the five piece. This was the band's first time in Inverness and with a reception like that, I'm sure they'll be back soon!

Opening the show, were the talented female, three piece rockers, The Amorettes. I saw these girls towards the end of last year and was really impressed, but seeing them up closer they really blew me away! With lead singer and guitarist, Gill Montgomery's powerful, edgy vocals, coupled with sisters Hannah and Heather Mckay's rock solid drums and bass this is one loud, proud, rock band! This band rocks as hard as any others you'll come across and highlights of their all too short set were, 'Let The Neighbours Call The Cops', 'White Russian Roulette' and crowd favourite 'Hot And Heavy', which got the whole room bellowing the chorus! Check back soon for a full interview with the girls.
GUN in action!
Sandwiched between these two great acts were Glasgow rockers, GUN. When it comes to catchy songs, this band have got them, and more! Kicking off their punchy set with 'Let It Shine', the popular, Cameo cover, 'Word Up' and the brilliant 'Don't Say It's Over', the Inverness crowd were hooked. Tommy Gentry has now joined the band on guitar and did an excellent job adding energy and style throughout the set. Brothers Dante and Joolz Gizzi have been rocking together since the late 80's and really know how to put on a show. GUN will be touring the UK in the Autumn, make sure to catch them.
Catch them on their last few dates!

Dan Reed Network / VEGA - gig review Glasgow 8/3/17

Oran Mor, a converted church, was an apt setting for a night of truly uplifting live music headlined by Dan Reed Network, with talented support act, VEGA.

I've not been to many gigs where the band are lead in by a piper and head on stage wearing kilts, which is exactly what Dan Reed and his band did to set the scene on their only Scottish date of their European tour - what a lovely touch!

Opening with an incredible cover of KISS's 'Rock And Roll All Nite' the crowd were certainly ready for an evening of rock n roll! It's also not very often I've been to a gig and seen the band have as much fun as the crowd, proving what incredible entertainers and musicians these guys really are. Setlist? This band don't even need one! Taking requests from the crowd throughout the night and making it up as they went, creating a fun evening for all which fully expressed the power of music and the joy it brings people.

After being piped off stage again to the crowd singing 'Flower Of Scotland' and 'Auld Lang Syne', Dan Reed and his band headed off to the merch stand to greet happy fans, sign many autographs and pose for pictures.

Me with Melvin Brannon II, DRN bass player
Warming up the crowd first however, was UK AOR band VEGA, a personal favourite of mine. They started out with the cleverly written, double-chorused 'Stereo Messiah' to get everyone moving. Their pacy, lively set then included favourites new and old such as 'White Flag' and 'What The Hell' before reaching the final two songs, catchy anthem 'Wherever We Are' (another personal favourite!) and crowdpleaser 'Saving Grace'. The boys told me after the gig that they will be announcing some headline shows later in the year, so don't miss them!  Check back here soon for the full interview.

A truly wonderful night from one of my all time favourite bands, VEGA who delivered as always, but also from Dan Reed Network who I was seeing for the first time and who blew me away! If you have the chance to catch either of these bands then I highly suggest that you do - you sure won't be disappointed!

Still time to catch these guys on tour!

Black Star Riders head out on tour

The excellent Black Star Riders are taking to the road to promote their new album, 'Heavy Fire' with Gun and The Amorettes on support (Backyard Babies join Gun from 8th March to the end of the tour).

Check out the dates below and grab your tickets here.

Consisting of singer, Ricky Warwick, guitarists Scott Gorham and Damon Johnson along with Robert Crane and Jimmy DeGrasso on bass and drums. These guys are "the next step in the evolution of the Thin Lizzy story" (a number of them having played in Lizzy at some point), having changed the name to Black Star Riders out of "respect to Phil Lynott and the legacy that he created" according to Gorham.
This band has some serious talent and music with a resemblance to Lizzy material - don't miss seeing them on their March tour!

We here at Denim and Blether will be hoping to catch a few words with Black Star Riders and The Amorettes on the tour, so make sure to check back for that!
The Amorettes will be joining Black Star Riders and Gun for the first five dates of the tour, with Backyard Babies taking over for the remainder.

I was lucky enough to catch the boys at their Aberdeen show last year
VEGA are one of my personal favourite bands and never fail to disappoint with their catchy, anthemic songs and their energetic approach.
